It was another weekend of mixed fortunes as Nigerian players took centre stage across the various football leagues around the world, just before another international break.
While the performances of some were heart-warming especially as Nigeria get set to face Algeria in the next round of games in the World Cup qualifying series, some others brew worries.
PREMIUM TIMES takes you through how it was for Nigerian players at the weekend for their respective clubs abroad.
It was a weekend to forget for Odion Ighalo as his goals drought not only continued in the game against Liverpool, but his team, Watford FC, were also annihilated 6-1 by Liverpool.
Ighalo is one of the players invited for the Algeria game and many will hope he drops his poor club form before getting into camp later today.
Also in the Liverpool game, Isaac Success was not listed for Watford as he continues to recover from an injury. It was a different ball game for Ovie Ejaria, however, as the youngster made his Premier League debut for Jurgen Klopp’s side when he was introduced in the 87th minute.
Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw at the Emirates in the North London derby, and Alex Iwobi put up yet another underwhelming performance for the Gunners.
The 20-year old started the game, but was taken off in the 70th minute after a rather ineffective display. For many, Iwobi will have to start scoring if he is to keep enjoying the confidence of Coach Arsene Wenger who has been picking him ahead of the likes of Olivier Giroud.
Despite being considered ahead of England striker Jamie Vardy, Ahmed Musa failed to make his presence count as the former CSKA Moscow forward fired blanks as Leicester were beaten 2-1 at home by West Brom.
Musa was taken off in the 67th minute and thus heads to Nigeria for this weekend’s crunch clash against Algeria on a low.
It was however a different ball game at Stamford Bridge where Victor Moses’ renaissance continued at wing back for Chelsea.
The Nigeria international once again put in an impressive performance for Antonio Conte’s side in the 5-0 walloping of Everton. Moses played for the entire duration, while John Obi Mikel was yet again not considered for action.
Sunderland finally got their first win in the EPL over the weekend and they did that courtesy of a goal from their Nigerian striker, Victor Anichebe.
The former Everton forward scored for the first time in over a year to help the Black Cats to a 2-1 win at Bournemouth.
Godfrey Oboabona was once again in the thick of the action for Rizespor and played the entire duration at the heart of the defence, but couldn’t help his side to a win or a clean sheet, as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Adanaspor.
It was a draw also for Osmanlispor, as they played out a 1-1 draw at home to Kayserispor, with Nigeria international Aminu Umar playing for 90 minutes before being replaced.
Former Dolphins striker, Emem Eduok, started for Kasimpasa and lasted 63 minutes, before being taken off as he fired blanks in their 2-1 defeat at Konyaspor.
Kenneth Omeruo scored an own goal but still helped Alanyaspor to a thrilling 4-3 home win over Gaziantepspor. The defender played the entire duration of the match.
Leon Balogun and his Mainz squad were beaten 3-1 at RB Leipzig on Sunday. The central defender played all through but couldn’t stop his side from going down.
Former Nigeria U17 and former U20 star, Abduljeleel Ajagun, was on for Roda from the start, and helped them earn a point at Zwolle, before being replaced in the 90th minute.
Meanwhile, Bartholomew Ogbeche could not carry on with his goalscoring form last weekend and therefore couldn’t help Willem II as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at Ado Den Haag, with the striker involved from start to finish.
In the same game, new Nigeria call up, Tyrone Ebuehi, lasted the entire duration for Den Haag, doing so at left back, having played at right back last weekend. The 20-year old was on for the entire duration.
Life is getting better for Joel Obi as his team Torino romped to a 5-1 victory over Cagliari in Serie A. The Nigeria midfielder came in as substitute in the game, appearing in the 62nd minute, but failing to register his name amongst the goals.
Elsewhere, Nigeria U-23 striker, Sadiq Umar was on from the start for Bologna in their defeat to AS Roma.
The Bronze medallist at the Rio Olympic Games enjoyed only 50 minutes action; firing blanks before being taken off.
Nigeria’s only known name in La Liga, Uche Agbo, was in the Granada team that played out a 1-1 draw with Deportivo La Coruna. The Super Eagles invitee played for 75 minutes
In Ligue 1, former Nigeria captain, Vincent Enyeama, was in goal as usual for Lille, but was on the losing side as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Angers.
Wilfried Ndidi earned a ninth minute yellow card but that didn’t stop him from playing 90 minutes and helping Genk earn a point in a 1-1 draw with Club Brugge. And at Gent, winger Moses Simon started at left wing back and lasted 84 minutes in their 2-0 defeat of Waasland Beveren. Anderson Esiti was introduced in the 77th minute, while Rabiu Ibrahim watched all through from the bench.
Standard Liege were 2-1 winners over Mouscron, but they did that without their on loan defender Elderson Echiejile, who was not listed for the game.
Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye did his confidence no harm ahead of the World Cup qualifier against Algeria, as he scored yet again for Olympiakos, this time in a 3-0 thumping of rivals Panathinaikos.
Defender William Troost-Ekong was not listed for Haugesund in their 1-1 draw with Stromgodset, while Shuaibu Ibrahim and Jude Izuchukwu were listed but didn’t feature.
It was a good day for Lillestrom as they recorded 1-0 win over Molde and they did that with the help two Nigerians – Ifeanyi Matthew and Innocent Bonke – who both played for the entire duration.
Former Nigeria U20 striker John Owoeri scored four goals in BK Hacken’s 7-0 rout of Falkenbergs. He is now the top scorer in Swedish top flight with 17 goals to his name.
